ZHAW at LCIC 2024
Event Description:
The Life Cycle Innovation Conference takes place every two years in Berlin as a hybrid conference. It addresses sustainability challenges through innovative approaches and methods, discussing these during presentations, workshops, and barcamps. The conference explores using a systems perspective concerning the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, fostering a unique space for creative thinking on global sustainability efforts and linking them to innovation processes.
Participants:
Alena Frehner and René Itten.
ZHAW’s Contribution within the Conference:
Mrs Alena delivered an oral presentation in the session “Life Cycle Innovation in the Transport and Mobility Sector.” The presentation focused on the social life cycle impacts of the FuelSOME system, showcasing results from a screening social LCA using the PSILCA database. We calculated the social impacts of electricity production from various countries, which represents the feedstock for e-fuels. The results indicated significant variation in social risks associated with electricity production across different countries, with generally lower risks in Europe compared to Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It was found that social risks mainly arise during electricity production itself and during the mining and extraction of energy sources.
Benefits for the FuelSOME Project:
Participation in the conference enabled valuable networking opportunities for the FuelSOME project. It facilitated exchanges on the methodology of social LCA, addressing challenges linked to assessing social impacts and discussing preferable approaches and potential solutions.
